Currency exchange for a foreign exchange student in japan?

I’m 16 years old, going on a foreign exchange to Japan for 10 months. I’m going to be getting money sent to me, but I have to find a decent or moderately easy way to exchange currencies.
I’m really stumped on this one.
I’m going to be living in Chita-shi in the Aichi-ken prefecture, and it appears to be a somewhat small city.. but it isn’t far from Nagoya and Tokai-shi. I’m just wondering what my options are, seeing as I am only 16.

Im sure that your host family will know where to exchange $ to yen. on Okinawa you can exchange $ to yen @ the mall, they exchange machines somewhat like when you go to the arcade you can change $ to quarters but ….well you get what im saying. Oki Bound

You don’t mention where you are from. If it’s the U.S. almost any bank can change it. We had a homestay student from Australia recently though, and she had to go to one of the larger bank offices to exchange Aus$. threedaypriest

It sounds like you aren’t fully sure yourself how your parents will be sending you your money. Normally, money would be sent overseas by international wire transfer. A wire transfer requires a receiving bank account, which means that you need to open a bank account in Japan.
A second way for you to get your money is to have it deposited in your bank account at home. You just go to the post office and take your money out in Japanese yen from the ATM.
I can’t imagine you bringing ten months worth of cash and holding onto it for the whole ten months in your possession. So either way, you’re going to have a bank account. It would be slightly more convenient to have a Japanese bank account. Leftcoast USA
