Just hand them cash at a currency exchange and they'll hand you the British Pounds back at whatever the going rate is at that time. A credit card or bank account is absolutely not necessary, they will normally give you a receipt showing how many dollars you gave them and how many pounds they gave you which is often a duplicate that you sign and receive one copy of.

Wait until you get to Heathrow to exchange money. Although airports are not usually the best places to change money, you'll get a much better rate there than you will changing at an airport or bank in the states before you leave. Gerald J

you can also get your bank to order some pounds before you go so you will already have them. and exchange rates at the airport are high. dcgirl

Yes, there are exchange kiosks after you exit Immigration/Customs. You can give them US $ and get Pounds in return.

There are also exchange kiosks in USA departure airports. You may want to exchange money there so you don't have to look for a kiosk after arrival in the UK when you are jet-lagged.

If you have time, your bank at home can either exchange the money for you or direct you to another bank with exchange services. NOLA guy
