Sometimes they don't work right, or have huge lines. I usually change a small amount of money at the hotel as I leave each morning and take one credit card with me. If you are not good at quick math, I would exchange money or use the card, because you run the risk of getting hustled on the exchange rate for your change. The math is not bad though. Its about $5 = 10,000 colones. Also, make sure you don't wear any jewelry out around the city, and if you can help it, don't use a wallet or purse.
