depends on the country
i wouldn’t exchange at the airport due to their exchange rates are usually higher

The best way to handle currency exchange is to use an ATM card and get the money that way - you get the best exchange rate and it is most convenient.
If you can, depending on where you are going.

depends on which seas you are going over. I will assume you are an American and have dollars. You need to find out the best thing for the country you will arrive in.
In most cases, airports are the worst place to exchange. But sometimes not. Bangkok’s airport has good rates. If you go to Burma, you will need to bring cash into the country. No atms there. So, you see, the answer is complicated.
Atms are the safest way to go, but not all are the same. B of A bank charges $5 for each transaction in some countries. Washington Mutual charges 5% while most debit and credit cards charge 3%. Here is a web site with info on banks and cards.
Some people bring a few travelers checks along just for emergencies. Don’t you hate it when the bank machine eats your card. Oh yes, remember to tell your bank where you are going. They may red flag a transaction from somewhere far away.
