The rates that you see online are just spot rates and only banks that exchange large amounts of money can get that rate. Travelex is pretty good- they don't charge a service fee for anything over $450 and the more money you spend, they will give you a currency return guarantee and a better rate. You can come back with any leftover money and exchange it without a fee or a markup on the rate. I would suggest exchanging all your money before you leave. If you use ATMs all the time, you will be killed by fees and exchange rates- it will end up costing you more money in the end.

the best thing would be to change it in Thailand there will be ATM's at the airport. they will also accept the greenbacks.
but for something interesting you could try local coin dealers who like me sell currency at a slight discount to the going rate. you might pick up some cheap currency. As I am in Australia it would be a bit far to come for the exchanging here, but give the local coin dealers a try?

I always use Thomas Cook on Geary Street. Be aware that you're paying conversion fees.

A frequent traveler tip: If you're going to be in an area with ATMs, it is more convenient and usually more cost-effective to get your cash from the ATMs once you arrive. Of course, you'll want to have about $100 in local currency for the first few days, before you get your cash.
